Wireless Code

In 2013, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) created the Wireless Code, a mandatory code of conduct that applies to all wireless service providers and to all retail mobile wireless voice and data services.

As explained in the CRTC’s detailed regulatory policy, the goal of the Wireless Code is to make it easier for individual and small business customers to get information about their contracts for wireless services, including their rights and responsibilities, and to establish minimum standards for wireless service providers. The CCTS administers the Wireless Code, applying the Code to resolve complaints it receives from wireless customers, and also tracks and reports on violations of the Code.

Recent amendments to the Wireless Code by the CRTC came into effect in June 2026.

Annotated Guide to the Wireless Code

The CCTS also publishes and periodically updates an Annotated Guide to the Wireless Code, which is a section-by-section discussion of the CCTS’ approach to interpreting and applying the provisions of the Code based on its experience with thousands of complaints it has investigated.
